Doping examination

Why is a so called „Doping examination“useful?

First we have to emphasize that we are not talking about a classical doping examination but with a blood examination we try to determine if there where medicaments within the blood which could influence the horses' health status during the moment of pre-purchase exam.

For example: a slightly lame horse gets painkillers a few days before the pre-purchase exam and is therefore sound when assessed by the veterinarian. In this case the veterinarian cannot detect the problem and assesses the horse too positive. Another example: a horse with chronicle back problems is injected in its back a few days before the pre-purchase exam. Due to this treatment, which often includes cortisone, the horse looks better than he actually is. That is why we recommend you to do a doping test or at least take the option to do such a test by collecting blood. We recommend this to the seller as well!

When a horse shows problems within a short period after sales, the purchaser could suspect that the horse was doped during the moment of purchasing. In that case we can still send the blood which was taken during the pre-purchase exam and stored at our clinic, to the laboratory for a doping examination. The doping test is therefore beneficial for both purchaser and seller.

How is a doping examination processed?

With this doping-examination a blood examination will be processed in a specialized laboratory. During this examination it will be determined if NSAIDs, Cortisone or sedatives were present in the blood. The results of this test will be received 2 weeks after the sample is sent to the laboratory.

There are two different procedures:
1. When the blood is examined immediately, a so called “Doping set” is used (similar to that used in human sports medicine) and an A and B sample is produced and sent to the laboratory. This method is, legally seen, the most reliable since the samples is taken and closed under supervision with witnesses. The disadvantage is that it needs to be examined right away because it cannot be stored. The additional costs connected to this procedure (materials, transport etc.) can amount to 200 till 300 €. The sample is processed at the institute of biochemistry in Cologne. This laboratory is officially recognised and has the necessary knowledge and equipment to perform this procedure.

2. We can store the blood in case it is needed for later examinations. Stored blood cannot be used in “Doping sets”. If needed the blood will be prepared in such a way that the serum can be sent to the laboratory. For this the following procedure is used: Blood is taken from the vein (app. 10 samples) and those samples will be processed in our laboratory by our employees to separate the serum and store it in new tubes. Then it is stored in the fridge for half a year (collecting blood, processing and storage for 6 months 45€).

Method 1 is more reliable regarding legal protection but method 2 is most commonly used. We advice seller and purchaser to discuss what method should be applied since costs vary considerably. We recommend for all involved parties to examine the blood right away to prevent questions or misunderstandings later on.
