Our clinic undertakes annually many pre-purchase examinations for horses of all price levels. A pre-purchase examination is a fact-finding session and can be a useful tool for both the buyer and the seller. It helps to provide the buyer with enough information to make an informed decision as to whether a horse will meet their needs. For us as veterinarians it is very important to know what intensions the buyer has with the horse, because for example, requirements for breeding horses differ considerably from those for sports horses. A pre-purchase exam is not a pass or fail test but it is a physical examination for assessing general health, conformation, soundness and serviceability on a particular day. It is also not a guarantee for future soundness or health because a horse is a living animal which can always develop future unsoundness’ or health problems; it can also react if the workload changes after the sales.
It is important to know that all horses have defects, but the veterinary exam is there to identify those problems and see if a buyer is willing to deal with them.
