Ophthalmology
In addition to the treatment of acute traumas with severe wounds to the eye and the eye- area, we also treat chronic eye- inflammations.
A common eye problem is the recurrent eye inflammation. Often a damage of the not visible fibrous layer of the eye is the cause of a severe conjunctiva inflammation. Even problems like an obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct or a fly induced eye inflammation could cause the owners to worry about their horse. Therefore extensive eye examinations are of great importance.
Often an inflammation reducing therapy must be applied for reducing the swelling before structures like the different layers of the eye can be examined. For these examinations ultrasound can be used. No matter what the cause of the problem is, an eye inflammation always needs to be taken seriously. If you don’t intervene problems could worsen.
A mistake horse owners often make is to try to treat an eye problem themselves first with an old ointment. Important to know is that independent of the date of expiring, eye ointment can not be used longer than six weeks because it ages quickly after opening. Also important to know is that when the wrong ointment is applied, the eye disorder will not improve and in many cases will only be more aggravated. An example is the appliance of cortisone ointment to conjunctiva defects, which constricts the healing of the conjunctiva and therefore the risk of a bacterial infection rises. This results in additional damages of the conjunctiva.
Periodic eye inflammations can be difficult to manage but it is important to persevere. Although not every involved aspect of this disease is known, the new surgical technique, called vitrectomy brings new options and possibilities.
