MRI Magnetic Resonance Imaging
MRI; a revolution in equine medicine?
Since February 2004, the revolutionary technique MRI on horses is offered to our clients at Burg Mueggenhausen. We were the fourth equine clinic in the world to install MRI. Until now (08/2007) Dr. Thorben Schulze performed over 1.200 examinations on the distal limbs of standing horses. With his extensive basic scientific work he now has an international reputation as MRI specialist in equine medicine.
With this technique and without the side affects of radiology like by x-rays, it is possible to see all the anatomical structures and more details of the bone of the affected area in the limbs of the horse. Not only bones are visible, this technique enables it to examine the soft tissue as well. So we can obtain a clear overview of the state of structures like ligaments, tendons, joints cartilage, bone surfaces, and the navicular bursa, which was not possible in the past.
In equine clinic Burg Mueggenhausen it is possible to perform these examinations by the standing horse in a special predetermined room. For each examination, are hundreds of single images produced, from different sections, from different angles that can be interpreted afterwards by the treating veterinarian.
This new technique is for equine orthopaedic diagnostics worldwide still in one’s infancy; in Europe equine clinic Burg Mueggenhausen was one of the first clinics who introduced MRI. Because it is possible to get a better and more detailed overview of the affected area many new and surprising discoveries have been done about both anatomical and pathological conditions of the equine limb.
