Surgeries under general anaesthesia
Many medical problems can be treated surgically. For most surgeries e.g chip removal, fractures, pasture injuries, teeth problems, castrations etc. horses are put under general anaesthesia for the operation. The increased risk connected to a horse under full narcosis has decreased due to the improvement of anaesthetic techniques, for example the sensibility of the computers monitoring the horses’ ‘state of sleeping’.
Today, the high risk stage is the recovery phase, and not the narcosis. Several measurements has been taken to decrease the risk of horses injuring themselves during the recovery phase. Our recovery box is provided with a soft mattress wall and anti slip and shock absorbing rubber floor. While horses are waking up, it is important that the surrounding area is quiet and not too bright. This calms the horse and it takes longer time before it tries to stand up.
